Why is Gutter Cleaning Important?

file0001475476069Gutter cleaning may not be glamorous, but it is a necessary chore. Left unattended the results of clogged gutters are not pretty. Gutters and downspouts are designed to collect rainwater as it pours off your roof, but they also do a good job of collecting leaves, sticks, nuts, dirt, and other vegetation. These clogged gutters can and will lead to a host of problems.

Clogged gutters will not perform their primary duty of keeping water from flowing off your roof and away from your foundation. This can lead to soil erosion, foundation damage and basement leakage causing mold and mildew issues. Overflowing water can also run down the walls of your house causing staining, discoloration, wood rot, and the destruction of expensive landscaping. Stagnant water collected in clogged gutters make them prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other insects. If clogged gutters are not dealt with before weather seasons turn cold, they can also lead the development of ice jams that can add extra weight to your gutter system and weakening it and the fasteners attaching it to your home, and further damage to the eave of your roof as they begin to melt.

Cleaning your gutters is a relatively easy job but can be messy. Depending on your location and the amount of vegetation surrounding your house, gutter cleaning should be performed at least once a year. A good time to do this is just after the leaves have fallen and before the freezing colds of winter set in. When cleaning your gutters, you will need a good pair of work gloves, hose with a spray nozzle, and a ladder. It doesn’t hurt to have a partner nearby for safety. This is also a service that many local contractors can provide. Remember to flush out the downspouts as well. If they are clogged with debris that will not clear with a hose, you may need to dismantle the downspout to get to the stubborn clog before cleaning your gutter.
