Why is Gutter Cleaning Important?

file0001475476069Gutter cleaning may not be glamorous, but it is a necessary chore. Left unattended the results of clogged gutters are not pretty. Gutters and downspouts are designed to collect rainwater as it pours off your roof, but they also do a good job of collecting leaves, sticks, nuts, dirt, and other vegetation. These clogged gutters can and will lead to a host of problems.

Clogged gutters will not perform their primary duty of keeping water from flowing off your roof and away from your foundation. This can lead to soil erosion, foundation damage and basement leakage causing mold and mildew issues. Overflowing water can also run down the walls of your house causing staining, discoloration, wood rot, and the destruction of expensive landscaping. Stagnant water collected in clogged gutters make them prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other insects. If clogged gutters are not dealt with before weather seasons turn cold, they can also lead the development of ice jams that can add extra weight to your gutter system and weakening it and the fasteners attaching it to your home, and further damage to the eave of your roof as they begin to melt.

Cleaning your gutters is a relatively easy job but can be messy. Depending on your location and the amount of vegetation surrounding your house, gutter cleaning should be performed at least once a year. A good time to do this is just after the leaves have fallen and before the freezing colds of winter set in. When cleaning your gutters, you will need a good pair of work gloves, hose with a spray nozzle, and a ladder. It doesn’t hurt to have a partner nearby for safety. This is also a service that many local contractors can provide. Remember to flush out the downspouts as well. If they are clogged with debris that will not clear with a hose, you may need to dismantle the downspout to get to the stubborn clog before cleaning your gutter.

Roof Valley Leak

Roof leaks are one of life’s headaches that cause stress, cost money, and look terrible when they are allowed to linger. Nobody likes them and most people can’t fix them. What you can’t do is allow them to leak for long periods of time. When this occurs mold among other things will set in your home and can cause air quality problems. Every time it rains, you cringe at the thought of what’s happening upstairs in your attic. Maybe you climb up to the roof and inspect what you think is wrong. This most likely leads to more stress as you come to find that it’s much harder to diagnose than you thought.
It generally makes the most since to hire a professional to inspect your roof and diagnose its issues. You do a quick google search for Roof Contractors and find that many companies offer to fix a leak, but you don’t know who to trust.
At Character Craftsmen, we work very hard to provide quality work for all our customers. We handle tricky leaks like this valley here:

Some inexperienced roofer decided to tar the whole valley vs doing the job correctly the first time. Tar on roof is a temporary fix, which has its uses although they are few and far between. What we did was to remove all this tar, the shingles in the valley and the felt to get to the bare wood. At this point we rebuilt the entire valley like new to achieve a leak free roof and properly correct the issue.

At the end we were able to complete this job at a fair cost and provide the customer with a warranty to backup our work. Where was this roof? In Alpharetta, GA, in a town home community only 7 years old!  That just goes to show even builders can make mistake in the construction industry. Character Craftsmen is here to help solve these problems and Lear our homeowners happy at the end of the day.
